On Land or By Sea, Insure Your Summer Vehicles

By May 26, 2021June 28th, 2021No Comments
As summer quickly approaches, many of us are excited to break out the jet skis, boats, RVs, motorcycles, ATVs, dirt bikes and other fair-weather recreational vehicles. Before you kick off your summer fun, you might want to pump the brakes and make sure you get your insurance coverage in gear! Wait, do I really need to insure all my recreational vehicles? In short, yes! Even veteran operators of such vehicles can find themselves in an accident or not adequately protected. With insurance, a financial hassle is reduced or eliminated. There are a variety of coverage options available to consider, such as:
  • Injuries
  • Property Damage
  • Loss or Damage
  • Emergency Assistance
  • Accessory Coverage
On Land Many vehicles are required by law to be insured if they are registered for road use, such as motorcycles and RVs. There are some vehicles that legally might not need to be insured depending on the state, such as dirt bikes and ATVs. Regardless of the laws in your state, it is wise to insure yourself against the financial burden tied to unexpected damage, injuries and or a catastrophic loss. Many of these recreational vehicles include or offer coverage for accessories and equipment that are attached to the vehicle. This could range anywhere from personal effects, added enhancements to expensive safety gear. There are coverages available that can help offset the replacement cost should these items become lost or damaged during an accident. In addition to physical damage or loss coverage, it’s really important to consider liability protection. This comes into effect especially when others are involved. Whether you collide with another motorist or a passenger is injured, there are medical and legal expenses that may arise. It’s best to have insurance in place to protect yourself in the event of an unexpected loss. By Sea There is a breadth of coverage options for all kinds of water vehicles, such as sailboats, speed boats, jet skis and even non-motorized watercraft. Even though most states do not mandate that you must have boat insurance, it is really in your best interest to protect yourself. However, most marinas these days require proof of insurance before putting your watercraft in the water or while it is moored at a marina. Physical damage can occur to your boat whether you’re in the water or not. It is best to have a policy that protects you against accidental damage or loss when it is afloat, in route to its destination or in a storage facility. Arguably as important, if not more important than physical damage coverage is liability protection. Summer days spent on the water are great for friends and family, but as the owner of a watercraft, you are held liable for injuries or property damage to other watercraft, docks or people. In fact, because of the severity of possible injuries and accidents, it is important to consider a personal umbrella policy as well. There are additional coverages available to provide peace of mind for your watercraft. Similar to roadside assistance offered by many auto insurance policies, boat insurance may offer on-water assistance should you need mechanical servicing and/or towing. There is also equipment coverage available to insure watercraft accessories and personal property aboard the boat.
